Full renovation for one of the room of an old condo. The client, a couple who's been living here for long time, were looking for the house they can enjoy the rest of their lives. Carefully selected materials and details to make their wish come true, and aimed for high-quality space. As to its ceiling, without touching up its original historical concrete slab, refurbished everything else. All those materials will be aged beautifully as time goes by, and will be attractive day by day.

Private Residence / 2007

There used to be so many wholesale stores around this area. The slender area is 60 square meters and suitable for business. To construct living accommodation In such occasion, privacy and security must be preserved. So we designed concrete wall on the longer side without windows and openings. It also shuts the light of the setting sun. On the other side, Three openings on the wall in order to contribute to prospering the streets with the inner lights shine through them. And planting a maple tree in the the void surrounded by concrete wall, tells the seasonal changes. In this way, between inside and outside, interactive compromise was born.

Dental Clinic / 2011

Project of a dental clinic located to a busy traffic intersection. In such a place without great circumstances, wanted to make an architectural structure having some potentials inside. From the beginning, the client who is a dentist had a vision of the floor plan, and required living space for the 2nd floor was only 30 square meters while requested public space on the first floor was 130 square meters. Due to these giving conditions, the shape of the 1st floor became distorted rectangular with bit of strange perspective. And the 2nd floor created space with front yard and back yard as the result of locating the room in the center of the diagonal line connecting the corners of distorted shape of the 1st floor. Also, created the atmosphere as the symbol of ideal local dental clinic that is community-based the client is aiming for.

Office & Store / 2010

Reconstructing project of a traditional eel store established over 100 years ago in Yanagawa-city. This form is led by many restriction such as floor level gap by iterating reconstruction. Heavily burnt and carbonized cedar board on outside and inside wall, this is because of charcoals the artisans have used to grill eels for a long long time.

Boutique / 2010

Boutique in VIORO in Tenjin Fukuoka. Client make me two contrary requests, one is open facade in order to invite guests and another is closed interior not to be seen from outside. As a solution, We constructed the closed shop like wrapped up that has a wide opened facade with a hanging diagonal wall to the opposite angle that also meets fire department's requirements in shopping mall. And this inclined facade wall crossing with elevator line made up a peculiar visual. The facade wall is covered with hundreds of copper sheets same size as the stone plates on the floor, Hundreds of copper sheets on the facade wall same size as the stone plates on the floor, gonna lose luster by touch of people who are interested in, and their color turns reddish-brown(It's only copper and bronze) by oxidation and corroding as time goes by. By reason that TRENT has established shops on streets by this time, I intend to create their brand image by using materials such as copper, stones, concrete blocks and scaffold just like other TRENT shops been done.

Grasses Store / 2009

Reconstructing project of optician's small store in front of elevated railway. Client's request is a non-daily and strange space. Functional element arranged to both ends, only glasses are seen through the old facade from outside. Walking through the tunnnel approach, selected glasses are displayed all over your sight. To make a beautiful contrast with various colored glasses, the space should be only a background. By changing the color of fluorescents that light up the street, the passengers are aware of the season in the nighttime.

Boutique / 2009

Lady's boutique. Although the floor area is small, we focused on utilizing the area for common use next to entrance. Laying both area with turf works inside or outside, and using sashless glasses. The continuation of area is emphasized and felt bigger and wider.

Toru Shimokawa

Born in Fukuoka Japan 1983. Studied Architecture by himself, then established his own atelier in 2005. His First Architecture called [S House] completed in 2007 was awarded Bauwelt Prize 2009 in Berlin, and chosen one of The World's 30 Architect of Wallpaper* Architects Directory 2009. And was Invited to exhibit of International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2009 in Chabot Museum, Rotterdam. In 2010 He moved his atelier to Kurume-city where he was born.
